My wife and I along with other friends spent 3 days here, we had campers and camped there, dove every day, and even night dives as well. As far as diving goes, I dont know what else you could ask for a fresh water location, plenty of wrecks to dive, jets, bus, sailboats, even a tunnel system to simulate caves. visibility was great, at least 15-20 feet, of course if you get a lot of folks in they will kick it up some, but thats the same anywhere you go and it settles fairly quick. Just a great site to dive and have fun. They do have a full dive shop, on site showers and rest rooms, as well as a gear rinsing station, some covered areas, picnic tables, and even a grill to use if you dont have one. They are close to an active railroad track, and the train does come thru at night, and uses the horn, so know that if you stay overnight. Its not the cheapest place to dive, but It is worth it as far as we are concerned, Its got to be a lot of work to maintain and operate a place like this. and your entry fee gets you snorkel equipment, kayaks, life vests, swimming noodles, if you like. As far as the staff and customer service goes, Calvin and Shannon are amazing folks, very friendly and helpful, they want you to be there and they want you to have a great time. We were there for my wifes birthday and our anniversary, when They found out it was her birthday, they came to our camper and surprised her with a birthday cupcake, and a shirt. Truly great people who care. We are already planning another trip later this summer. This truly is a great place and super nice people,,,
Ive never written a review before, but I was so impressed with this place that I had to. The water was amazing clear (which is surprising for Texas), and exploring all the sunken planes/boats was incredible. We came in pretty clueless, but the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. We did not scuba dive because all the equipment gets pricey, but we freedove down to all the wrecks. It wasnt too bad, and plenty of wrecks are relatively shallow (~10-15ft) if you know what youre doing. For only $20 all day I can not recommend this place enough. Id give 6 stars if I could. Its not for wading around with young children though. The water is pretty deep, and there is no shallow area. But if youre a strong swimmer I would highly recommend.
Didnt get to dive there, yet but met owner and can say hes a great guy. He seems to have decades of experience, and has clearly been into many types of diving. If you want experience and a family run business, with shop to pool to lake, go here
I highly recommend coming here if you love any sort of diving sport you will definitely like it here! Great facilities from dive shop to restrooms and an amazing family that runs it!
Such a patient instructor, such a good time. Train here. It will make your skills herds better, and your ocean dives will be super-epic!
The staff is very friendly and organized. Nice outing during Covid, you get assigned your own dock.
This is a great place to buy your scuba diving equipment. Great customer service, great product, and the location is amazing.
This is a nice little place to get a dive in. I came here with some friends when our Flower Gardens trip got cancelled. The owners were really super nice and friendly. The viz wasnt great, only about 8-10 feet, due to recent rains. Theres no fish due to the mineral content of the water, but theres some cool wrecks down there. I particularly liked the big plane and Clint Eastwoods cabin cruiser. They also have showers and a changing room, which was really nice. The water was only 67 degrees, so I was really glad to be able to get into dry clothes!
The owners are very helpful and accommodating. We had planned a family of 4 dive trip there for an 1 to 2 hour dip in the pond and left with $300 less in our wallet. The breakdown is $20 entry fee in the park, $20 tank rental, and $10 weights. We already had most of our equipment and only had to rent 2 setups. The clarity of water wasnt that great, about 5 feet. We do understand that this is the only scuba park in East Texas but feel like they could be a little more reasonable. Dont understand for the need to charge $20 just to set foot in the park (no matter the age of children). We have around 100 dives and the tank rental have always came with weights. Wish the water was more clear and maybe it would have made our experience better. We are headed to the Caribbean next month for a family dive trip and we have excursions booked for 1 tank dives from boats for $50 that come with fruit and drinks.
The park looked abandoned, and not well kept. The showers were interesting, there are 2 showers and one toilet with only a thin curtains separating everything. The water felt slimy and actual visibility was about 5 feet. The best part was the train that kept passing and the horn that it blew. The price that you pay it isnt worth it.On a positive note, the staff was extremely friendly.
Came out to dive and do full face demo. The owners and staff have excellent customer service. Purchased 2 Ocean Reef full face mask and got them set up ready to go. I will just say websites cant touch the deal we got due to their demo specials. Top notch folks. Thanks again.
Though visability was low due to a lot of divers, it helped me practice my navigation. Best part for me was diving the airplanes, really neat experience. Staff was so friendly and accommodating. Their shop has anything you need from rentals to outfitting you with your own gear. They offer fun water activities from time to time. I dove my first scavenger hunt this weekend where the prizes were worth playing the game!
Absolutely fantastic wreck dives! great dive shop w air fills. very safe. not deeper than 30 ft. ok visibility, it is a lake. so many awesome things to dive through! bus, planes, boats, tube system, wow! camping available w hookups, shower area. great customer service!
I absolutely loved it. The water is Crystal clear. The staff is friendly and helpful. The prices are very reasonable. Had a blast.
We volunteered to help clean up the sunken wrecks for this season. Great atmosphere, good company and free O2 and lunch today. Great place to learn scuba, too! We have season passes here and love it for a leisurely day of diving and being outdoors.
Love the staff, great place to dive in Texas.
Family owned and operated, these folks bent over backwards to host and accommodate us. Shannon is so kind and great with our kiddos. She even drove up in her golf cart and hand delivered a grill to our site. The full service dive shop offers anything you might need. The visibility was awesome! Clean, safe and comfortable culture. They have covered picnic tables, on site training and certification and a smile every time we interacted with the staff. We love Athens Scuba Park and we will be back!
Amazing park with tons of wrecks to see. Great staff, fast and efficient air fill station. Visibility was 15-25 feet in most areas. Will be back!
Fantastic scuba park! Ive been here many times and its always been a great experience. The viz is the best youll find in the area, typically 10-20 feet. They have a bunch of airplanes, boats, etc to poke around. Theres also a system of steel culverts on the bottom to do cave diving in.The staff is very friendly toward properly certified solo & self-reliant divers... they also dont have a cumbersome system of reservations: just show up and dive! The only thing I dont like is that the depth maxes out at about 30 feet, theres also no fish. The only wildlife I found was a lone turtle.Anyhow, I love it here! 5 out of 5 stars
Neat place, Nice people, and a good scuba shop.
I came here a year ago to practice buoyancy control. I came alone, no problem; I was invited with open arms. Today, I drove there again (75 miles in each direction) to practice my navigation skills. Nope, cant do it. Now I need a buddy. What? You dont need a buddy to practice navigation skills in 20 feet of water, but thats their new policy. So I wasted several hours of time and a half a tank of gas. But to add to that, this lake is funky, and when you leave, you will also smell funky until you take a shower. Ever wonder why there are no fish in this lake? None!
Here’s an honest review. This place is amazing. End of story. Family owned and operated by some of the most friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable people. The visibility when I was there (Aug 1, 2018) was a good 25-30 feet average. When I was diving through one of their big Jet Airliners, I could see all the way through it no problem. (50-60 feet visibility.) Now I’ve been to other scuba parks in Texas, (Huntsville and over in Terrel), and I’ve never seen the visibility that good. Also Athens has over 30 wrecks to look at! Definitely my new favorite spot to dive in Texas! I would drive out of the way to come here! Tank fills are $10 a tank and took about 3 min to fill mine! Very quick! Also they have a full bathhouse with Double Showers, restroom and hair products for a nice hot wash after you dive. We participated in an event while we were there that included finding golf balls sunk in the lake and you get a free prize in the shop for finding one! Someone won a $500 MARES COMPUTER! Such a great place I highly recommend this place!
I have two good instructors and having a really good time learning to dive
Good way to get wet
Great place to go. Friendly and accommodating staff.
REALLY nice folks! Knowledgeable, great facilties. Comfortable, relaxed atmosphere
Loved it! The staff was amazing! Water was crystal clear. We had a wonderful time! Definitely going back!
Superb staff. Knowledgeable people and I feel as though they will have my well being in mind during their dive class
What an awful place. Not sure who is giving these people 5 stars. Trash everywhere, looks like a dump. Water has zero visibility, if you are not right next to your dive buddy you cannot see them. There are no fish in water. Not 1. Only larva, insects and spiders in water. We stayed in RV site. Awful set up. Trash, un-explainable random barb wire lines in the middle. Our 5 year old ran into them. Hurt his face.Train passes super close blowing horns all night. People running this place seem to be very clueless and unapologetic for these conditions. They should not be allowed to be open to public as RV park or dive site.
As much as I want to give this place all of the stars, you dont find many if any places in texas to dive aircraft and buses and the like inland, it was just a bit horrid. The amount of barbed wire and random pallets and discarded scrap around the grounds was a bit overwhelming. It was $40 for the electrical unit for the RV, which doesnt have a water hookup, plus its a whole thing to walk from the water. And then theres the 20 a day fee plus 5 to dive per person. The visibility was at best 5 foot, we had a four person crew and easily lost each other with barely a kick cycle. Not their fault of course since it is a clay based quarry. The pricing was just disappointing since we live near canyon lake which we can dive for free with better visibility. If youre from the San antonio area, you get what that means. The train..... I didnt sleep the whole night. Ive been here before amd the regular camping spot was only 5 dollars which is very far from the train... But the RV spots that are very over priced are literally a stones throw from the RV spots. Take an Ambien or sleeping aide if you want to RV camp. The staff are completely amazing, incredibly helpful and overwhelmingly nice, love them.
Favorite family spot. Owners are phenomenal!
Great place to go scuba diving lots to see
Now these people know how to scuba woth a smile!
Great local spot to go diving when in Athens. Visibility was really bad but it had been raining a lot for about 2 week so its understandable. Staff was super nice and helpful. Will be back again.
I always enjoy coming out to Athens Scuba Park!
This place is awesome, everyone is so friendly and its such a great time, every time, for a very reasonable price. Keep it up!
The staff are the absolute best!! Always love visiting Athens SCUBA park.
Super nice people that run this place. Clean environment. Viz varies every time weve been there.
Fun dives swim dive shop good stock available
Although visibility is sometimes limited, the staff is super friendly and the outside restrooms are very clean. Lots of cool stuff to look at underwater.
Great place, nice people.
If you make reservations you should call and remind them. If you enjoy diving in your bathtub this place is for you. Or if you really like trains. Loud trains.
Great Scuba Dive Location. Awesome Staff, would ave been 5 stars but the Visibility was about 5 feet.
Relaxing, simple, friendly: Athens Scuba was a great place to relax for the weekend and have a good time diving. It is not high tech and shiny but the people were friendly and the prices were reasonable. We really enjoyed the sunken bus/tubes and the plane. Expect more technical diving and great navigation practice instead of sightseeing.
I learned to scuba dive here. Great staff and a wonderful experience.
Very nice scuba park. Was a fun visit
Helpful and engaging.
Been diving/swimming at Athens Scuba Park for nearly 11 years now. Absolutely great service, water is gorgeous, and all around serene environment. A gem in the middle of Athens, TX.
Fun diving and awesome staff! They really took care of us.
Alway a great place to dive. I just wish the visibility was better.
I like it great people and the lake is a fun place to dive.
Very interesting place. Very friendly owners.
It was fun. Murky water though
Love the quiet, peaceful, clear blue water!!!
Awesome people! Really cool place!
Best inland Scuba Resort in Texas!
Awesome owners, great visibility,
This SCUBA park is a cool venue, but the vis tends to be horrible. The website stated 30 but it was more like 3...
Only about 3 feet viz. Second trip and second time viz was only 3 feet.
Been coming since this opened and Calvin has every year added a little something something.
Great place to dive!
A grate place to learn to dive!
Unbelievable! The US Navy uses them!
