A beautiful tree to experience. Not only because of the tree itself, but also the story behind it and of W. H. Jackson. True or false it is still a great acorn tree. Do all that you can to protect trees and Mother Earth.
Tree that owns itself?!?!! LOVE IT! Be careful with kids . the wall around the tree literally goes into the street. It takes up a full lane so traffic in either direction have to take turns going around the tree...
Who here searched this up bc @giofilms on youtubed made a video with this in it cuz i sure did
A White Oak, the Tree That Owns Itself is a stunning location that presents a remarkable tourist location, that no one ought to miss. Contrast to the vapidness of concrete and brick, the lush leaves of this sculpture of nature paint a vivid image akin to a Bob Ross painting. Let there be minuscule doubt, for this wood, hardened and resilient, is present for any wistful individual.
This tree was the perfect spot for a picnic by myself! I needed a little moment of peace and this special little tree was the perfect spot to rest and read in the shade. The grass around it is comfy and there was some cute little birds in the trees. People who live nearby should definitely taking control of this adorable tree!
Well, its just a tree. Not impressive. But the story is really cool. In essence it can never be removed because it legally owns itself. This should be done for more trees.
Interesting neighborhood. Where else can you find a tree thats a property owner?
Cool stuff man. Can’t make this up
Imagine looking for fun things to do in Athens and a tree is recommended... this is what we come to?
Absolutely impeccable. the tree is just fascinating and has many branches and well over 12 whole leaves. definitely impressed 10/10 would recommend to go again.
Never been here. I just want the tree to have 5 stars. It looks beautiful
Amazing plce to commit arson reccomended x
Sure its family tree has a few nuts in it, but all and all turned out well developed and has branched out into many areas. Has deep roots in the community and while some thought it to be shady they were looking for its dark side.
As someone else said, Who gives Tree that Owns Itself less than 5 stars? What do you people want?Agreed. Its a good tree Brint.
He’s a little shady but overall a great guy! 10/10 would recommend giving him a good pat on the bark or maybe read a book to him.
Ive never been here but this tree deserves the five stars for its independence
Equality for all exemplified in its purest form.
This is the best tree. Its the three-set of trees. There is no tree as knowledgeable as this tree it knows so much it can fill a library of.......books... O_Owhathaveidone
This is most amazing tree Ive ever seen! It is so independent.
THE TREE THAT OWNS ITSELF of Athens, Georgia, is a White Oak Tree that, according to legend, has legal ownership of itself and of all land within eight feet (2.4 m) of its base. The tree, also called the Jackson Oak, is at the corner of South Finley and Dearing Streets in Athens, Georgia, United States. The original tree, thought to have started life between the mid-16th and late 18th century, fell in 1942, but a new tree was grown from one of its acorns, and planted in the same location. The current tree is sometimes referred to as the Son of the Tree That Owns Itself. Both trees have appeared in numerous national publications, and the site is a local landmark. The earliest-known telling of the trees story comes from a front-page article entitled Deeded to Itself in the Athens Weekly Banner of August 12, 1890. The article explains that the tree had been located on the property of Colonel William Henry Jackson.[1] William Jackson was the son of James Jackson (a soldier in the American Revolution as well as a congressman, U.S. senator, and governor of Georgia), and the father of another James Jackson (a congressman and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia). He was the brother of Jabez Young Jackson, also a congressman.[2][3] (William Jackson was reportedly a professor at the University of Georgia, and is sometimes given the title of Doctor. The nature of his military service and the source of the title Colonel are unknown.)[4] Jackson supposedly cherished childhood memories of the tree, and, desiring to protect it, deeded to it the ownership of itself and its surrounding land. By various accounts, this transaction took place between 1820 and 1832.[5] According to the newspaper article, the deed read:I, W. H. Jackson, of the county of Clarke, of the one part, and the oak tree ... of the county of Clarke, of the other part: Witnesseth, That the said W. H. Jackson for and in consideration of the great affection which he bears said tree, and his great desire to see it protected has conveyed, and by these presents do convey unto the said oak tree entire possession of itself and of all land within eight feet [2.4 m] of it on all sides. It is unclear whether the story of the Tree That Owns Itself began with the Weekly Banner article, or if it had been an element of local folklore prior to that time. The articles author writes that, in 1890, there were few people still living who knew the story.Plaque at the site, weathered by exposure; the stone faintly details a passage from William H. Jacksons deed to the tree. The story of the Tree That Owns Itself is very widely known, and is almost always presented as fact. However, only one person—the anonymous author of Deeded to Itself—has ever claimed to have seen Jacksons deed to the tree. Most writers acknowledge that the deed is lost or no longer exists, if in fact it ever did. Such a deed, even if it did exist, would have no legal standing.Under common law, the person receiving the property in question must have the legal capacity to receive it, and the property must be delivered to—and accepted by—the recipient.William H. Jackson did, in fact, own the property on the opposite side of Dearing Street from the tree. That plot included the present-day 226 Dearing Street, but in the early 19th century it was simply designated Lot #14.The tree, however, is located on a portion of what had been Lot #15.Jackson and his wife Mildred, along with a J. A. Cobb, sold their property to a Dr. Malthus Ward in 1832, the same year cited on a plaque as being the date of the trees deed. The Clarke County real estate indices contain no indication of when or from whom Jackson originally purchased the property, although much of the land in that area is reported to have belonged to a Major James Meriwether.Even though Jackson may have lived near the tree as an adult, his childhood was actually spent in Jefferson County, not in Athens, making it less likely that he had experienced idyllic childhood summers playing beneath the trees branches.
I love the story. Please keep on protecting the tree. ️
Havent been here yet but have been told its better than the grand canyon cant wait to watch lil kids
Rating 5 star because of wholesomeness
I highly recommend that more trees are given rights such as this and that non human animals also get this same privilege of owning their own bodies!
It didn’t even have a door . What kinda restraint serves bark . ? Hahah this is great
Good place to pick up new kids for the basement 10/10 would recommend (jk)
Very good service. It is certainly a nice place to throw sandwiches at children.
Come on guys, dont laugh. The tree has documents stating it has the legal ownership of itself.
Shady place but the branch manager went out on a limb to ensure my safety...5 stars.
Never been, but I ju as t came here to give 5 stars because some people are giving a bloody tree 3 and 1 stars?? So yeah, 5 stars because tree.
Quirky and unusual bit of history as this tree and eight surrounding feet of ground was deeded to own itself. Off the beaten track in an area of mixed styles of historical and architectural interesting homes and off a cobblestone street in Athens Georgia . When the original tree died, an acorn from it was planted and this is its offspring.
The best tree there ever will be. I hope it stays here forever.
I high-fived a leaf of the tree. That was awesome. This is actually the son of the original tree that owned itself, and I was thrilled to be able to save some acorns off the ground. 5000/10, would recommend. You go, tree. Fight for your rights.
Havent been there, but its a pretty neat tree
I mean it’s a tree that owns its self can’tcomplain it’s cool.
Nice place. Threatens to shoot if you step within 8 feet though...
Lovely tree, every tree should be able to own itself! I am a big fan of trees and support this tree.
Idk I saw an instagram post and thought it looked cool
Really fun story to tell around will remember for a long time to go
I have not been here but awesome stort and amazing tree
I conceived all seven of my children here. Magical place
A good piece of history, a good lesson, and way better than other trees of similar caliber. Id give 6 stars if I could.
Made of wood and provides shade on hot days. Would recommend.
Wonderful place to stroll through and throw bricks at by standers!
Gives me fresh air 10/10 would breath again.
As good as an independent tree can get
Havent gone in person but its now on my bucket list. Great story.
The Tree that Owns Itself is an Athens landmark. Legend has it that in the early 1800s out of love for the great oak, its owner, Professor Jackson, deeded to the tree ownership of itself and the land within eight feet of it on all sides. The marker at the foot of the tree reads as follows: For and in consideration of the great love I bear this tree and the great desire I have for its protection, for all time, I convey entire possession of itself and all land within eight feet of the tree on all sides. Once you know the story, you can amaze your friends with this tidbit of trivia!
This is a local favorite. Driving a round the tree is a little weird and cobble stone drive is really good historical image.
Havent expierenced visiting this tree, but saw it on Ifunny
Why are people giving a tree less than five stars?
Fantastic tree. 10/10. would visit his property again.
Saw it on iFunny. Wanted to rate it. 12/10 would visit if I had the funds
Great service, very kind tree. Didnt talk much.

Havent been myself, but its a cool story
Come on its a tree that owns itself its an amazing spot 10/10
I tried talking to the owner who owned the tree for three hours, and they said NOTHING, still recommend though because its very intresting on looking at a tree whos owner doesnt really speak
Well good food but slow service it takes a while year for the order to get received.
From iFunny, but the story is actually hilarious and interesting
Glad there wasnt any bread staples on the tree. Unless it wants it of course
When this tree owns itself its Cool and Awesome but when I own Zimbabwe Slaves, its Cruel and inhumane
A nice little spot in a quaint neighborhood in Augusta. This was a really fun, historical site created from love and happiness which made it even more enjoyable. Its just a short side trip off the beaten path and worth the time.
A bit of history to read up and visit, its basically a tree in the middle of a residential neighborhood thats fenced in
This tree owns more land then i ever will
More trees should own land.
An Athens landmark. Get out and hug the tree! Enjoy what makes Athens ATHENS! Quirky weird authentic ...
Interesting piece of history. Unique!
The air it produces is very crisp!
This tree is more libertarian than most libertarians I know.
Wow, what a tree. 10/10 wood recommend visiting. If youre in the area, you gotta branch out and stop by fir a little while before you leaf. Some might say theres not mulch to see here, but honestly Im stumped when I hear that. Maybe theyre just being sticks in the mud or throwing shade for no reason, but to anyone whos not a total sap, this tree is more than just oak-ay. Its well grounded and super down to earth, its everything you want to seed in a tree. Honestly, Im nuts about it.Keep on keeping on, tree, were all rooting for you.
Its a good tree bront
With this independent tree, we breath, without, we breathnt.
Keep doing your thing tree.Youre the best tree out there and the puny mortals who dare to deny it are just jealous

Its quaint and has a great story. In a neighborhood with gorgeous houses. Perfect place for a walk : )
This is actually the son of the original tree. 10/10 would plant again.
I said I dont like how the tree looks and it sued me for $14,000 worth of emotional damages
Tree pulled out a shotgun and told me to get off its property, wood not recommend.
I will assassinate you, tree. I will surpass you. You may be a god, but I will chop your neck down. Tree, Owner of itself.
Cmon, how can you NOT love this tree??
A great spot for photo taking
