Great place to visit with kids. You can learn the history of Stephen F. Austin the Father of Texas. They have many historical items to view, a huge statue of the man himself out front and a small version inside to take lots of pics n selfies with. Out in back its very Green lots of Grass and trees for you all to relax. Hope to make a stop and visit cause its well worth it!
A good quick stop to learn some Texas history. Wife and I only spent about 15 minutes there and didnt check out the visitor center. It was a good time though. The grounds were peaceful and the statue is pretty good sized! There was a cute bird nesting I the gravel very close to where people drive/walk...hopefully her chicks survive! There were 3-4 little eggs until her tail and she fluffed up a bit when I absentmindedly wandered to close. Anyway, fun monument to visit!
Free parking and admission. Plan on 10 to 30 minutes if you just look at the displays, or the rest of the day if you have questions. The staff are effectively human encyclopedias who can answer any question you have on Stephen, his father, why he came here, the history of Texas, Mexico, the US, North & South America (as well as Pangea, volcanism and plate tectonics which created the continent), English, Spanish and French (plus their predecessor) empires, human development and advancement on earth to this point, economics, philosophy, string theory or the meaning of life they are well-versed in those arenas as well. If Im ever stuck in an elevator, I hope it to be with folks like these.
The lady Jennifer was so nice and informative on the monuments, my husband and I really enjoyed our visit there.
Great park for shade picnic or walking dogs in great sof grassThere are horses on the back of the property belonging to someone else are so pretty adding to the serenity
The visitors center was small but Stephanie was wonderful. She was so knowledgeable about everything. So friendly and just all around nice, not to mention rather easy on the eyes.
Jennifer was amazing! Extremely energetic and knowledgeable, she spoke with such passion. I highly recommend visiting and spending some time learning about the history of the area. We had a great time!
Didnt hate it but it was closed and all we saw was the statue st the front.
Usually we are there with no one else fishing. Its nice and relaxing.
The statue is breathtaking and is something every Texan should experience. However, I do wish there was more shade on the property. If so we would have stayed longer and had a picnic etc. We will try again when it is cooler weather in hopes to make it more enjoyable.
Jimmy and Jennifer are amazingly informed folks who never fail to teach me something new about where I am from.
Very informative staff. They really know Texas history and how to make it real.
Dont expect to stay for more than 5 minutes to look at all the detail, but it is pretty cool and neat. Theres apparently a building in the back but staffing Id limited (and when locked no bathrooms). Pretty cool be of Texas history
Awesome local monument. Beautiful lit and finally well maintained. Great for kids as well.
If you want to learn something about Texas history, this is a must see. Definitely worth a visit.
Monument to SFA. Giant statue. List of the first 300 Anglo settlers in Austins first colony. Where modern Texas began. Not much else at the site.
This is a great place to visit. The people inside dont just tell history they tell stories. The stories are what makes our history so interesting. Also as a note to the earlier review, I did ask about hours and the gate. Their hours are Tuesday thru Sunday 9am to 6pm. If the gate is closed it is okay to walk in the park but there is no access to facilities when the park is closed.
Really cool place staff is awsome very engaging and informative I recommend checking it out
A nice tribute to Stephen Austin. Friendly staff on site. Took several photos.
Very cool monument to visit, it definitely makes a statement as you drive by. The staff was knowledgeable on the history of the monument and Steven Austin.I wish the interior of the informational building would have been more organized. It appeared cluttered with papers laying about and displays half together.
Had an extremely interesting tour given by a staff member who was very knowledgeable after Texas history and from whom I learned more than a few things I did not previously know. Highly recommend to stop and visit.
Very interesting facts about Stephen F Austin and the lady who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable.
Nice place to educate your kids!Great people working there!
Well knowledge employees, great historical information cited, must see.
Nice scenery to make a stop and stretch. If you being driving for awhile
Great place
Informational glad I went
As a descendant of the TEXAS 300,I was extremely pleased with all the artifacts from the period along with the knowledge and friendliness of the staff
Enthusiastic staff improving the 15 acre museum site and activities offered.
They have a lot history and displays! The staff was knowledgeable and helpful.
The gate was closed and I didnt want to be a gate jumper and be fussed at, so I had to settle for photos from the driveway. This was on a Tuesday afternoon and may have been closed due to incoming rain. There is NO sign on the gate or much information available online, so I guess you have to call them beforehand. Kinda a bummer when you get there at 3:00 in the afternoon and theyre closed with no signage telling the hours or days open. They need to join the digital age and at least post their hours/days online, instead of having to call their phone number. Ive noticed, in several photos, that there was no gate or fence blocking visitors, possibly due to stupid vandals and the after-hours interlopers. The wood fence looks fairly new, so no telling.
Lots of neat stuff to look at. James is very knowledgable about Texas history. Ladies in there on Fridays are quilting. Very nice.
Small but good specially staff is friendly and informative.
Super huge statue of Stephen Austin. I didnt know this thing existed so we stopped and took the kids picture. The grass was a little tall and mosquitos were defiantly out at the time, but it was worth it. There is also areas to picnic and there is a hall available for parties if needed. Plenty of parking in the area
We go here every time we go to Galvinston. Always have a good time and learn something new.
Its a small museum with very welcoming staff. I actually learned quite a bit about the role Stephen F. Austin played in Texas history.
I was blown away about the amount of Texas History that I learned within an hour of visiting there. Truly an amazing place with knowledgeable people.
They hosted a Cub Scout event for us. Its interesting place you should stop by if you get a chance
Hands down a 5 star hidden gem in the history resources of TX. We were driving by on the way home from a family vacation and stopped by to see the statue. When we went inside the information building we were pleasantly surprised to meet the park ranger on duty. He shared endless information about not only Stephen Austin but also the state and local history. He took time to give the kids quizzes and even let them touch some of his artifacts and handmade wooden toys inspired from the Frontier days. Thank you for an afternoon to remember. I misplaced his name but he was working on August 4th 2016 around noon. He had a contagious passion about history and made it fun & engaging for the kids. Thank you!
If you are a history Buff you gotta go. The guide was crazy helpful.
