Visited many times growing up in Anchorage back in 80s. Always loved to visit. The pics are old but this is a snapshot of the late 70s early 80s. Enjoy

Beautiful place to go. My family comes here to hike often. We have gotten to see broken off pieces of the glacier in the lake but cant wait to come back during summer to see the glacier by tour. Very convenient to have campgrounds ands so many trails in the area and some great fishing spots all close.

A short drive from Anchorage, Portage glacier provides a cost effective way to get up close. The boat trip around Portage Lake gave a great perspective. At one point we watched a grizzly bear walk across the glaciers snow pack. Its worth the effort to make it here, especially for families with younger children or folks who prefer a less strenuous way of seeing one of Alaskas glaciers up close.

Very beautiful lake. Also beautiful glacier. You can buy a ticket direct from the boat. Very friendly staff. The journey will teke around 2 hour.

Excellent view and quick. The Portage Glacier cruise included a presentation of what you are seeing while on the boat. The trip takes about an hour and half, and it is just perfect. I highly recommend this for people that do not have much time.

When we were there in 1994, It didnt calve, it COWED We were on a boat, the water was clear and then I started to hear a small noise which got louder and louder then a huge chunk of ice came off the glacier and there was ice all around the boat, which the captain expertly had moved away from the glacier. Thrilling experience!

2.5 mile hike (one way) in the snow when portage lake is frozen over. Bring snowshoes or skis in the spring during break up season or you will have a rough time.

Walking across the frozen lake was amazing. Lots of people on bikes, great place to bring your dog as well. Definitely worth the slippery hike. Just make sure not to get too close to the base of the glacier as this area can be dangerous from calving.

A boat tour to Portage Glacier near Anchorage, Alaska can be a memorable experience - especially when a huge calving block of ice sends your tour boat rocking!

If it happens to get cold enough during the winter, be sure to make the ~2.5 mile (one-way) home across the lake when it freezes over. The glacier is gorgeous up close and certainly something everyone needs to see.

A glacier that requires a day journey to reach, but you wont be disappointed.Portage Glacier is hidden well behind some rock, so if you want to see this glacier youll need to travel to it. You could take a ferry from the Portage Glacier Cruises and that would be the easiest way to see Portage Glacier. Travel by kayak to the glacier is also possible, but youll need to bring your own kayak and travel with someone experienced with the weather conditions. Finally you could hike to it from Whittier via Portage Pass Trail.

This is so weird that you have to take a boat to see the glacier now. My father in law built the visitor center 35 years ago and the glacier was right there. Now you have to take a boat to see it. Really????
